Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality first surfaced in 1968 with Ivan Sutherland’s head-mounted display, so heavy it had to be suspended from the ceiling, and showing simple wireframe drawings generated through computer graphics. Nearly fifty years on, the AR medium is set to transform how we experience life in its entirety, as we know it, completely transforming the ‘screens’ we interface with on a daily basis.
Leading innovators in technology, like Google, Microsoft and Apple, have set the precedent for the future of AR through investments and strategic moves. Imagine the world that we live in with all the information visually delivered to you, how you want it, in the way that you want it, when you want it. AR is precisely as it is defined: an augmented, or some might argue, improved, reality that that we live in.
In this course, you will learn the foundation of computer vision and augmented reality, and walk out with practical experience that you can immediately implement and use on your next augmented reality project or career. You’ll learn how augmented reality systems, in tangent with their areas of application, form a new foundation for design opportunities.
Led by highly experienced and peer-evaluated experts in the AR industry, and guided by a number of industry relevant mentors, you will solve an AR problem in a commercial application and also have a chance to create your very own AR application. Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to use a range of different equipment, learn theory, and embed practical tools and approaches, all whilst absorbing these learnings through fluid, interconnected and guided AR techniques. The content and applications of AR are only nascent of the future opportunities, capabilities and uses that are set to come.
Step into your own Augmented Reality now at an exciting time of inception to change the world in transforming the way we all experience it in the future!
There are no prerequisites for this course. Within this ever growing space, the learnings are structured to take you from a complete beginner knowledge base into a mini AR pioneer foundation.
We’ll track the evolution from reality to augmented reality, and the inspiration for AR’s conception, while we explore its map on the digital landscape today, and its use across industry applications for the future. You’ll uncover how it can be used in a variety of expected (and unexpected) industries, and what exciting possibilities lay ahead in the field. It’s our new reality, only better!

‘Talk techie to me’ with the whole tech lowdown on translating human functioning, motion and nature into a non-human interpretation in computer language. Nuts about natural feature tracking? Giddy about geolocation triggers? Inspired by imaginary ray selectors? Don’t know what any of this means? No problem. We talk all about AR user interaction and the sensors employed to achieve these connections during this section of the course.
Tech straight talk at its most applicable.

Let’s explore! We dive into AR software and tools in our AR arsenal that will help us build 3D and 2D games, mobile and tablet apps, and get familiar with the world’s most widely used open-source computer tracking library for AR code. Ready? Let’s play.
Software and tools:
- Unity 3D
- Vuforia 6.5
- AR Toolkit
Let’s talk about the reality of AR communicating with our devices: How does AR interact with our hardware and what limitations are there with these [seemingly endless] capabilities? We explore current device offerings that utilise AR (holographic hardware and AR optics), kits that create holographic experiences and secretive, mixed-reality technology.
- Mobile phones and tablets
- Microsoft Hololens
- Meta 2
- Magic Leap
How do we define an other-worldly problem? And better yet, how do we plan for it? You’ll find out in this module. Learn how to augment eCommerce goals in augmented reality with POC. In case you’ve been living in another reality, you know that there’s no realm untouched by user experience design, and AR is no exception. We analyse the amalgamation and realities of how UXD and AR work in conjunction.

It’s all systems go as we move from reality to augmented reality using a range of augmented reality content creators (with super fun names, we might add, like Auggd, Vuforia, Blippar - say those three times fast in rapid succession!) and take your idea from fruition to execution. How do we present initial, iterative, intangible ideas in an intuitive landscape for our stakeholders to grasp tangibly? We’ll plot this too with the leading rapid AR prototyping tools. And then we’ll put it all together and roll it out on your app platform of choice.
