With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, the need to design applications that are ‘mobile-first’ or mobile-friendly has become a top priority for many businesses.

Designing for mobile to ensure that a website is responsive requires a completely different platform for designing for traditional desktop. Mobile design requires a specific set of guidelines to ensure that a user’s experience is seamless and intuitive.

There are two main approaches to designing for mobile — Progressive Enhancement and Graceful Degradation. Progressive enhancement is the ‘mobile-first’ approach and designs for the smallest screen before building up.

The Graceful Degradation approach is the opposite, and most common approach —  a designer will produce a complete set of features are all implemented from the beginning for desktop, and then these features are reduced to be appropriate for mobiles.

Which approach should you use when designing for mobile?

At our lunchtime event, Learn How to Design for Mobile with Freelancer, we’ll explore:

  • The differences between designing for mobile and desktop
  • The differences between Progressive Enhancement and Graceful Degradation
  • When you should use either approach and what common Design rules and strategies are optimal for the mobile experience
