Tackling Domestic Violence in Australia

Academy Xi will be supporting Shore School’s Year 10 Design Week, an event that neatly ties together the company’s Xi Act and Gen Xi social initiatives.

Xi Act represents a commitment to making a positive impact in the world through education. While Gen Xi is a series of programs aimed at empowering children, the leaders of tomorrow.

Over the course of a week, the Shore boys will be introduced to Human-Centred Design philosophies, learning by doing, as they find a solution to a real world social justice challenge – domestic violence in Australia.

Working in groups of six, the boys will be guided through the design thinking process by an Academy Xi mentor. At the end of the week they will present their prototypes to a ‘Shark Tank’ panel of experts, with the winners given a shot at pitching for a $100k donation from Sydney Impact 100, putting their solution into action.

Academy Xi will offer a complimentary online course to each member of the winning group. There will also be a bonus prize of one full course scholarship to the stand out performer from the week.*

Beyond the prizes, the main takeaways for the boys will be an understanding of the design thinking process – a glimpse into a prospective future career, and the awareness of a societal issue.

Tackling issues in society and finding solutions to them is a key cornerstone of the Xi Act, and an important step on the way to becoming into a well rounded individual.

Experts on the ‘Shark Tank’ panel include; Samantha Donnelly – UTS, Toby Norton-Smith – CBA, Alan Duncan – Impact 100 Chair, Liz McKinlay – Mary’s House Chair, David Mason-Jones – Shore Foundation.

Academy Xi investor Rajeev Gupta will also participate, delivering a pitching masterclass for the boys ahead of their big moment!

Full rundown of how things went to follow soon.
